YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIn the 1950s, researchers were experimenting with theta pinch magnetic confinement. The problem was clear: as plasma got hotter, it would escape out the open ends. No matter how strong they made the magnetic mirrors, the hottest particles would leave.
Then something unexpected happened. When they reversed the magnetic field rapidly, the plasma didn't escape. Even with the ends still open, it stayed confined.
This accidental discovery changed fusion research forever. This clip discusses what happened when plasma self-organized into a closed field, and why the material science had to catch up before anyone could use it.
