TRANSCRIPT
The ACC Commission has declared Athens to be a “safe haven” for the LGBTQ+ community after nearly 2 hours of public comment in support.
“As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I can tell you that, right now, we are living in a time when the safety and the rights of our community are under increasing threat…it can be as though our very existence is under attack.”
Despite the outpouring of support, Commissioners Culpepper and Thornton voted no.
“I can’t support a resolution that focuses exclusively on just one community.”
“I just have too many bad memories of resolutions that we’ve passed in the past, that we did not anticipate the collateral damage maybe one or two or three years later.”
