TRANSCRIPT
I heard that the Athens-Area DSA was protesting the Chevron on Boulevard, so I went down there to check it out.
APN: What did Chevron do?
Athens-Area DSA: So Chevron is the largest seller of oil and natural gas to Israel. They are also the largest extractor of oil from the occupied Palestinian region. And they also are the largest extractor of natural gas from Venezuela, which we recently intervened with as well. So for a lot of reasons, we decided that Chevron would be a target for the DSA at large. Chevron is run by a franchise model, which means the people that own the store behind me are not the people that made this decision on Chevron's behalf. So there's an open letter that many Chevrons across the country have signed and we're hoping to get this Chevron and the other Chevrons around Athens to sign that same letter, asking the Chevron corporate to divest from their investments across the world.
APN: I guess that would probably cost Chevron a lot of money though, wouldn't it?
Athens-Area DSA: Possibly, but we think that there's no amount of money that's worth the human toll that this has caused. And we think that in general, this is a pretty cold and heartless calculation that Chevron has made to essentially put a price on life. And so maybe it will cost them money, but I think that customers and people at large will be happy to hear that they're no longer supporting genocide.
APN: Are you asking people to not shop here or not get their gas here?
Athens-Area DSA: This specific location, we've been in contact with the owner and we asked them a couple times privately if they'd be willing to sign this open letter. When they did not seem like they would be willing, we decided it would be worth going public with this. So yes, we're asking that at least for now, people do avoid shopping at or buying fuel from the Chevron.
(chanting) Chevron, you are out of line!
APN: The Athens-Area DSA is asking the Boulevard Chevron to sign an open letter against genocide. Until then, they’re calling for a boycott.
(chanting) Get your hands off Palestine!
