2:27Now PlayingACCPD Intelligence Analyst Nick Barker was fired on Friday for abusing the Flock Safety License Plate Reader system to stalk his ex-wife.
Barker had been the face of the Real Time Crime Center in Athens, Georgia, which is a police hub for all kinds of mass surveillance technologies. Licence plate readers allow the police to track virtually every vehicle in Athens.
Making this even more infuriating, just weeks before his firing, Barker more or less assured the viewers of the Classic City Crime Podcast that this tech couldn’t be abused.
Police Chief Jerry Saulters says that he is quote “moving forward with a complete examination” of how ACCPD uses licence plate reader technology, but at this point, I’m not sure there is anything they can do to stop these kinds of abuses short of ending our contract with Flock. Barker is far from the first police officer to abuse the Flock system. In my opinion, if you give people this kind of power, they’re going to abuse it. It’s just a matter of time. It is dangerous to continue allowing this kind of technology in Athens.
