Parishioners gathered for a memorial Mass Wednesday night at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in remembrance of Father John Howren.

“I would wish that every family could have a son like John. I think they’d be better for it. We’re better for it,” said David Dorries, his stepfather.

Howren died Monday from flu complications while visiting Mexico City. He served as a priest with the Archdiocese of Atlanta for 30 years. He had been with his current church since 2020.

The flu has been aggressive this season. His death is among thousands across the nation related to the flu this season. Forty-six people in Georgia have died from influenza since October, when the season began.
