1:51Now PlayingEast Point police say no foul play is suspected after the remains of 20-year-old Derek Samuel were found in the woods behind an apartment complex Sunday, weeks after he was last seen at a Target in Camp Creek Marketplace on April 29.
Police Chief Shawn Buchanan defended the department's investigation amid social media criticism, saying officers searched the woods and a nearby lake multiple times before finding the remains.
At the scene, investigators found Samuel's cell phone, a handgun and a shell casing. Police have not ruled out suicide as the cause of death.
