The materials sparked heated debates for months from opponents who say the lessons lean into proselytizing and include instruction more suitable for a Sunday school. While those in favor of the material – which is known as Bluebonnet – say it fills a need for high-quality instructional resources for overworked teachers and that the inclusion of Christian stories enriches students’ cultural literacy.
The state education board approved the material by an 8-7 vote with only Republican members voting for it. All Democratic members and three Republicans voted against the curriculum.
