As the Palisades fire grew, John Carr hunkered down in his home and defended it from the flames. Noting the Pacific Palisades home was built by his mother and father in 1960, Carr, now 65, said the home was passed down to him by his parents.

"The house was built by my mother and father in 1960 and I lived here my whole life so there's a lot of memories here and I think I owed it to them as well to try my best to save it," Carr said. "Some things are worth fighting for, you know?"
