The hearings concerning judge Brett Kavanaugh's potentially appointment to the Supreme Court and the allegations made against him and his behavior by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford have gripped the nation. Despite having only a few sparse recollections about the event she and others have claimed that this scarcity of memory is typical of trauma victims. She provided some scientific background for this claim, such as that "laughter is indelible to the hippocampus" and that her memories from 36 years ago are as clear as her current perceptions because of how "norepinephrine encodes memory". I found these phrases strange given Dr. Ford's background, given they are at best incomplete and at worst, inaccurate and do not represent the wealth of existing information on human memory, particularly memory in those who suffer from PTSD or other trauma. Thus, today, let's look at research on recollection in both normal and abnormal human minds.
