Cultural anthropologist Jim Heimann, editor of 'Surfing', has brought together 900 images that chart its evolution on and off the water, as a sport, a lifestyle and a philosophy. He spoke to Dan Damon about the role that photography played in capturing the images and the spirit of surfing.
