Speaking to the BBC's Emily Maitlis for This Week's World, he hinted strongly at the prospect of renewed calls for Scottish independence in the wake of a 'leave' vote, saying that the UK would suffer 'not only financially but also politically'.
Mr Trichet also defended Mark Carney's earlier intervention in the debate, claiming that speaking out was within the remit of the Governor of the Bank of England as a central banker.
