Hundreds of buildings have been destroyed in northern Syria, and at least 1,700 people have been killed.
However, sending help to the rebel-held parts of the country has proven to be difficult.
The aid routes that used to exist into Syria - which is almost 12 years into a civil war - have been gradually closed over the years.
The UN has said access through this crossing will be a "lifeline" for millions in need of humanitarian assistance.
