Péter Magyar’s Tisza party won a comfortable "super majority" with two-thirds of the seats in parliament, meaning the party will be able to change the constitution.
The defeat will mean a huge reset of Hungary's relationships with the rest of the world.
Orbán has been a close partner of both US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin, and he had become a big thorn in the side of the EU and Ukraine.
