We ask the BBC's Middle East analyst Sebastian Usher what leverage Donald Trump has to ensure Benjamin Netanyahu adheres to a ceasefire, and whether the US-Israel alliance is at risk.
Iran launched strikes on Israel at the weekend, in retaliation for Israel's campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon - and Israel fired back at Iran. When asked by the BBC if Netanyahu defied him by firing at Iran on Sunday, Trump said the missiles were “already on their way” when he spoke with the Israeli prime minister and urged him not to retaliate. “If I tell (Mr Netanyahu) to do something, he does it,” Mr Trump added.
Last week, while cautioning against Israeli strikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, Mr Trump reportedly called Mr Netanyahu "crazy" and accused him of ingratitude. The US president has also said that he "calls all the shots", and that Mr Netanyahu "won't have any choice " but to accept any deal the US makes with Iran.
