After hearing that a school friend had been killed in Afghanistan, that so-called Islamic State were beheading Americans, and that IS were active on social media, he decided to investigate their social media accounts. He ended up in Skpe discussions with a man who claimed to be a top IS military commander, and was trying to secure the release of hostages, including Kayla Mueller. But he got on the wrong side of the FBI who thought he was making it all up, and that he was crazy. He spent 14 months in prison, before getting a fresh psychological evaluation which found him sound of mind, and he was therefore freed. He spoke to Evan Davis In his first UK interview.
