Newsnight has been given exclusive access to the hospital and critical care unit at the centre of Italy’s coronavirus epidemic.

Filmmakers Francesca Sironi and Alberto Gottardo spent a day inside Lodi hospital in the Lombardy region, which bore the brunt of the outbreak when COVID-19 first hit northern Italy.

Italy, judged to be two weeks ahead of the UK, had its first case at the end of January 2020 and has currently recorded the largest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world.

More than 100 doctors have died in the country while treating those infected with the virus.

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has suggested that if scientists allowed it, they might relax some of their lockdown measures by the end of the April.
