President Trump blamed China for trying to cover up the coronavirus outbreak and has accused the World Health Organization of failing to hold Beijing to account.
But China’s President, Xi Jinping, has defended his country's actions during the crisis saying they've acted with “openness and transparency”.
So, has the virus fundamentally changed relations between the West and China?
According to the UK's last governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, the Chinese government has used the Covid-19 pandemic to “flex its muscles” over trade and geo-political issues.
Chris Patten told BBC Newsnight that people were now “waking up to the fact that the Chinese Communist Party is a serious threat to liberal democracy around the world”.
