Boris Johnson has also come under pressure from some of his own MPs after thousands students complained that their exam results were unfairly downgraded - with stark differences emerging between state and private schools.

Labour has called on ministers to act immediately to sort out an "exams fiasco" in England and stop thousands of students being "betrayed".
