“From age 12, I've not lived a normal life” | grooming survivor speaks to Victoria Derbyshire

‘Zara’, not her real name, describes herself as of mixed heritage – her mum is white and English, her dad is Pakistani and she’s from Rotherham, where according to the Jay review published in 2014, 1400 girls some as young as 11, had been abused between 1997 and 2013. The report said these children had been raped, trafficked and intimidated, predominantly by men of Pakistani heritage and Rotherham council was criticised for failing to protect victims. As a 12 year old, 'Zara' and her friends were groomed and sexually assaulted first by a 61 year old called David Saynor - now serving a 24 year jail sentence. And then, still a young teenager, she says she was groomed and raped by a British Pakistani man. He goes on trial later this year. Victoria Derbyshire went to meet her in Rotherham. We are protecting her identity because she's giving evidence in that case.
