In an interview with BBC 5 Live's Matt Chorley, the home secretary made "no apology" for the policy and said the technology provides "big advances" in the ability to go after criminals" and allows people to "go about their daily business in safety".
The number of live facial recognition vans available for use will rise from 10 to 50 under the Home Office plans.
