Speaking on the BBC’s Politics Live, the former Conservative cabinet minister said "we need to allow children to grow up".
The UK government is currently consulting on whether to implement a social media ban, inviting young people and their parents and guardians to submit comments ahead of a government decision on the proposal.
Politics Live presenter Vicki Young was also joined by Labour MP Sean Woodcock, the Green Party’s Baroness Bennett and Haroon Chowdry, the Chief Executive of the Centre for Young Lives.
Chowdry has called for MPs to vote to restrict access to social media platforms for under 16s.
