Speaking to Vicki Young on BBC Two’s Politics Live, the Britain Editor of The Economist, Sacha Nauta, said the policy was misplaced, and that small boats and the asylum hotels "won’t be fixed by this”.
“I just wondered if you’ve been asleep for the last ten years – we have a crisis”, Conservative peer Stewart Jackson responded.
Labour MP Calvin Bailey said: “what is un-British is to not try and address this problem… because it’s creating division and pressures and giving licence to people talking about immigration as if it’s a problem”.
