Dame Emily Thornberry has said she is “anxious" ahead of King Charles’ state visit to the United States.

Speaking to the Today programme, the chair of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Select Committee says the monarch’s visit is a “high wire act” because President Trump is “unpredictable”.

When asked about the UK-US special relationship, Dame Emily said the UK should be doing the “utmost to ensure we are good friends with as many other countries as possible”.

The King and Queen are due to arrive on Monday for the four-day visit, following a shooting incident in Washington DC at the weekend, at an event attended by President Trump.

Listen to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.
