The projections also suggest the UK population will grow more slowly than previously expected, reaching around 71 million by 2034. This slowdown is largely linked to a sharp decline in net migration.
At the same time, falling fertility rates mean the number of children is expected to decrease over the next decade, while the number of pensioners continues to rise more quickly than the working-age population.
On Politics Live, Vicki Young is joined by Paula Sheppard, an evolutionary anthropologist and human behavioural scientist at the University of Oxford, to discuss what these demographic shifts could mean for the UK’s future.
