German Version
Willi Mittlstrasser, born in 1911, completed an apprenticeship as a butcher in Munich and later passed his master craftsman’s examination. He first joined the Obersalzberg administration as a driver, later became a driver at the Berghof, and eventually served as Eva Braun’s personal chauffeur.
At the Berghof, he met his future wife, Margarete “Gretl” Mittlstrasser, born in 1914. She initially worked in the Berghof kitchen and later increasingly entered Eva Braun’s personal service. Gretl Mittlstrasser traveled regularly between Eva Braun’s house in Munich and the Berghof on the Obersalzberg, until Adolf Hitler eventually appointed her as housekeeper of the Berghof.
After their wedding, which took place at the Berghof, Willi and Gretl Mittlstrasser were appointed as the Berghof’s house manager couple. They succeeded Herbert Döhring, who had held this position from 1936 to 1943.
As permanent members of staff in Hitler’s immediate surroundings, Willi and Gretl Mittlstrasser had extraordinary insight into daily life at the Berghof, the Obersalzberg, Eva Braun’s role, and the routines within Adolf Hitler’s private environment.
In this rare eyewitness interview from the late 1990s, Willi and Gretl Mittlstrasser speak in detail about their experiences, their work at the Berghof, and their memories of one of the most well-known power centers of National Socialism.
This interview offers an exceptional historical insight into Hitler’s Berghof, the Obersalzberg, Eva Braun, and life in the direct surroundings of Adolf Hitler.
