America is running out of men who can fix things. Plumbers, electricians, welders, mechanics, carpenters, and other skilled tradespeople keep this country functioning—but as many as 2.1 million skilled-trade jobs could go unfilled by 2030.

Lowe’s has launched a major coalition to help develop one million American tradespeople. That’s encouraging, but it also exposes a deeper problem: for decades, America treated college as the only respectable path and taught young people that working with their hands was somehow second-class.

After 20 years aboard U.S. Navy submarines, I learned that competence matters more than credentials when equipment fails and lives depend on someone knowing what to do. America doesn’t have a shortage of meaningful work. We have a shortage of people who were taught to respect it.
