YouTube Description
as posted by the channel“I’ll finally be happy when I’ve decluttered the house.”
“I’ll feel calmer once I’ve meditated every day for a year.”
“I’ll have more time after I get that promotion.”
Sound familiar? Many of us carry the belief that the life we want is just out of reach, always waiting for us to accomplish just a little more or fix what’s not yet perfect. Author Oliver Burkeman invites us to flip this script: What if the way to live our ideal life isn’t about fully achieving it someday but embodying some aspect, of it, however small, today?
In this video lesson, Burkeman explores how to move from endless striving to purposeful action.
Show up right now
“Striving toward sanity” is the idea that our preferred vision of life is something we have to work towards. Maybe we have a little bit of it now. But mainly it’s coming later, after we’ve put in more work. Ironically, this belief can move us further from sanity.
“Starting from sanity” means trying to embody our ideal vision right now, however imperfectly. The writer Richie Norton describes this approach in 2 steps:
Decide who you want to be.
Act from that identity immediately.
Reframe your to-do list
When we’re striving for sanity, we may try to resolve all the little things before moving on to more meaningful projects. But if we dedicate our life to “clearing the decks,” the decks will just refill as fast as we can clear them.
Try thinking of your to-do list as a menu: You have an abundance of things from which to choose, which is great! The idea is to pick a handful of items each day. Make sure to prioritize what you’ll do first, whether the decks are cleared or not.
