Many of us have been there. You feel your cheeks flush and a rush of adrenaline as you raise your voice to really get your point across. However, getting louder does not mean you’re being listened to — that's a lesson CEO Steve Stoute has learned the hard way. As a reformed yeller, he’s recognized the futility of this approach and now advocates for a better one.

In this video lesson, he shares how to turn down the volume and connect with others so they hear what you have to say.

You might think volume means passion, but it often fails to inspire.

People respond to messages differently. Good feedback is bespoke. Start with empathy and put yourself in the other person’s position. Ask:

How could I say this in a way I’d want to hear?

How can I make it logical and clear to them?

People hear you better when they don’t feel intimidated. Try to get “eye to eye” with them.
