YouTube Description
as posted by the channelOver the years, critics have lamented how the tech industry tends to celebrate the rule-breakers. The rebels. The leaders who “disrupt” systems and reject corporate orthodoxy. But what if disrupting systems can actually inhibit the innovation they’re trying to spur?
In this video lesson, Google DeepMind’s Org Development Lead Martin Gonzalez challenges some common misconceptions about what it takes to build something great.
The Trap of the Maverick Mindset: Reflexively rejecting corporate norms without considering the human dynamics they help manage
Being disruptive in the management space often leads to dysfunction in the workplace. You don’t need to sustain old-school practices. But consider evolving them slowly.
3 Management Myths to Rethink
The Myth of No Hierarchy: “Companies should be egalitarian and reject hierarchy.” But research suggests that good leaders reduce operational ambiguities. Aim to establish a healthy layer of management that balances quality and creativity with commercial achievement.
The Myth of Sustained Heroics: “Scaling a company requires everyone to give superhuman effort.” This creates a team dynamic of overperforming and underperforming. Underperformers start to lean back and rely on overperformers to save the day. This imbalance in contributions spoils the culture. Instead, define clear roles and put systems in place to avoid single points of failure in the team.
The Myth of Structural Harmony: “Tensions between departments are often personality conflicts that should be solved.” But sometimes they’re necessary structural conflicts that serve as checks and balances within the organization. Monitor personality conflicts. But don’t rush in to resolve structural conflicts.
