He Survived the Night That Changed Special Forces Forever: MACV-SOG

During the Vietnam War, a small group of American soldiers fought a hidden war that most of the world never knew existed. These men were part of MACV-SOG, an elite Special Forces unit that carried out secret missions deep behind enemy lines, often across borders they were never supposed to cross.

In this exclusive interview, Patrick Watkins, a Green Beret who served with MACV-SOG, shares his firsthand account of life in that shadow war. He recounts the night his base was struck by a massive sapper attack, a brutal assault by North Vietnamese commandos who came wearing white headbands marked in their own blood, determined not to return alive.

That attack on Forward Operating Base Four became the deadliest day in U.S. Army Special Forces history. Seventeen Green Berets were killed, and countless others were wounded. Watkins describes the courage, the loss, and the unbreakable brotherhood that defined those who served in the most secretive unit of the Vietnam War.

For his actions, SSG Pat Watkins was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. We’re grateful that he took the time to sit down and share his story.
