When Platoon went into production, Dale Dye was given three weeks to take a group of unknown actors—Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe—and make them understand exhaustion, loss, fear, and discipline the way real infantrymen do.
What followed wasn’t acting school.
It was a brutal immersion into military life: real weight, night operations, discipline, punishment, and emotional pressure that permanently changed how war would be portrayed on screen.
