Madrid's gay community hosted its annual High Heel Race on Thursday, part of the city's Gay Pride festivities.
Large numbers of locals and visitors gathered in Chueca, the main gay centre of the Spanish capital, to watch participants charge down the cobbled streets in gravity-defying high heels.
Both male and female runners had to wear high heels with a minimum of 15cms height.
The final run was a relay up and down Pelayo St, with runners in wigs and blouses.
The race has taken place for over 20 years. The winning prize money is €350.
This year's gay pride occurs under a new conservative city administration, with Popular Party and Citizens Party winning in local elections.
The far-right party VOX, which may become a decisive minority voice in the council, has said that Madrid Pride should be moved to a park outside the city.
But people watching the High Heel Race said the event should remain in Chueca.
