0:30Now PlayingSwedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said Thursday that many people in Sweden were "surprised" by the strong reaction in America to the arrest of the US rapper A$AP Rocky. The rapper was detained in Stockholm three weeks ago over allegations he was involved in a fight, and an array of US celebrities, including President Donald Trump, have called for his release. Wallstrom said she doubted the controversy would affect relations between Sweden and the United States, and expressed the hope that the case would help Americans to gain a greater understanding of how the Swedish legal system works. Trump telephoned Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven about the case and offered to vouch for his bail, even though that's not something available under Swedish law. Wallstrom said Trump needed to appreciate that in Sweden "one can't pay to get out of jail."The issue appeared to have helped to raise the rapper's profile in Sweden, however. "I don't know if he was that famous here before this, but he got well known here in Sweden by this," Wallstrom said.
