0:35Now PlayingNine and a half months after his inauguration, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador continues to move the masses. More than 100,000 people gathered on Saturday night in the main plaza in Mexico City for Independence Day celebrations, events that for the first time were chaired by a president from the leftist movements. With the presidential band on his chest and accompanied by his wife, López Obrador followed part of the usual protocol but without so many guests in the National Palace, fewer banquets and no military staff by his side. And instead of paying tribute only to the heroes who fought for Mexico's independence 209 years ago, he highlighted national sovereignty, indigenous communities, peace, freedom, justice and democracy. This year's celebrations raised special expectations due to López Obrador being in the presidency. Since assuming the role, he has broken several moulds: he began to travel in commercial airplanes and makes himself available for questions from the press Monday through Friday at press conferences that have garnered record attendance. And while the economy is stagnant, the health system lacking, and he's been facing pressures from the United States to take strong measures against migrants, his popularity remains high, with approval levels around 70 percent.
