2:20Now PlayingBrian Leung's life was changed when he unmasked himself on July 1. During the storming of Hong Kong's Legislative Council, he was the one protester who took off his mask.
Leung gives his 1st on-cam interview since storming the Legislative government building during the Hong Kong protests.
During the outbreak of the movement, he said he was studying in Seattle. Watching the protests from abroad, he felt anxious seeing people being beaten by the police. He wanted to go home to join the fight, he said.
"The Legislative Chamber, which is originally supposed to belong to the people…By retaking that and storming it, we symbolically made a very strong gesture that we are voicing our discontent against the system itself."
He talks about the moment he stepped into the Legislative Council building, why he decided to storm it and why he ended up taking off his mask.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam condemned the acts by protesters, calling it an "extreme use of violence and vandalism."
Leung explains why he considers it unviolent civil disobedience.
