"I found my face on one of the live footage on television," said the runaway. "I was scared. Will the police come for me in the next few days?"
Leo (not his real name) says he was bringing supplies when protesters stormed the Legislative Council building. He recalls police marching in with tear gas and shields on the anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China on July 1.
"I got a big zoom on my face," he said.
In less than 24 hours, he packed a small bag and got on a flight to Taiwan.
Police have started arresting suspects link to the July 1 incident.
"I think it’s very hard to estimate the percentage that I'd get arrested. I say maybe 50-50," he said.
It’s a chance Leo is willing to take. And he's met others like him in Taiwan.
