Bernie Sanders, AOC Unveil $180 Billion Green New Deal for Public Housing

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are introducing a Green New Deal for Public House Act that would invest up to $180 billion over ten years to "decarbonize" the nation's public housing stock.

The legislation aims to repair and upgrade public housing by securing renewable energy sources for approximately one million federally owned public housing units, affecting some two million people, Sanders says.

"Our public housing stock has been neglected for far too long," he says.

"This bill will reduce carbon emissions equivalent to taking off of the roads over one million cars," he told a rally of public housing supporters and residents.

"It would reduce public housing costs by 30 percent, and energy costs and public housing by 70 percent," he said.

In other words, we're going to save public housing authorities money, and this will pay for itself."

Sanders says the bill would create approximately 250,000 jobs.

"It adopts the tenets of the Green New Deal," said New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"Public housing is infrastructure, and this is an infrastructure bill," she said.

According to a statement by Sen. Sanders office, the bill is endorsed by more than fifty organizations and cosponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, both Democrats.
