Community Remembers Saugus Shooting Victims With Vigil, Memorial

A vigil was held in a church outside Los Angeles on Thursday night, to remember the victims of a school shooting earlier in the day.

The shooting which killed two teenagers and wounded three others at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita took just 16 seconds and left the attacker in a critical condition with a head wound, authorities said.

Investigators searched the boy’s home as they sought a motive for the attack, which seemed to target students at random, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Captain Kent Wegener said.

Authorities said the teenager apparently acted alone.

There was no indication he was affiliated with a group or ideology, said Paul Delacourt, the agent in charge of the FBI’s (Federal Bureau of Investigation) Los Angeles field office.

Separately, a makeshift memorial was growing near Saugus High School. Flowers, balloons, cards and a wooden cross have been left on a beige wall near the school.

Kelsey Kotler, a 2011 graduate of the school, said she was in Thousand Oaks last year when a gunman opened fire at a country-western bar, killing 12 people. She left flowers at the memorial, saying she wanted to show her support.

"This is the type of community that's going to be lining the streets when these kids come back to school," she said.

Doctors say two of the victims wounded in a Southern California high school shooting are doing well after treatment and should be released from a hospital in a day or two.
