0:56Now PlayingA first responder who was dispatched to New Zealand's White Island after the volcanic eruption has recounted the "shocking" and "pretty overwhelming" experience.
Intensive care paramedic worker Russell Clark said scenes he encountered on the ash- and debris-covered island reminded him of the recent Chernobyl television series.
"Everything was just blanketed in ash, it was quite an overwhelming feeling," he told New Zealand broadcaster TVNZ on Tuesday.
Monday's eruption left five people dead and at least eight others remain unaccounted for.
The missing and injured include New Zealanders and tourists from the US, China, Australia, Britain and Malaysia.
As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern visited Whakatane hospital, which is treating some of the wounded, Clark said he could not imagine the ordeal the survivors endured.
"They had nowhere to go and an absolutely terrible experience for them," he told TVNZ.
The White Island volcano erupted with a towering blast of ash and scalding steam as dozens of tourists were exploring its moon-like surface.
Despite the danger, rescuers flew in by helicopter and helped evacuate the dozens of survivors, some of them critically injured.
