Thousands of Iraqi protesters gathered in Baghdad's Tahrir square, despite a recent deadly attack by unknown gunmen in a show of solidarity to the ongoing demonstrations.

Tuesday marks the two-year anniversary since Iraq announced the defeat of the Islamic State group.

Some protesters chanted national slogans and songs as they waved Iraqi flags.

"As people were united in defeating Daesh (ISIS), we will defeat the corrupt with our unity too," says Hadier Falah who was protesting among the crowd.

The spontaneous, leaderless demonstrations were organized on social media over long-standing grievances including government corruption, unemployment and a lack of basic services.

Demonstrations have quickly grown into the largest grassroots protest movement that Iraq has seen in recent times.

At least 25 people, including protesters and police, were killed and 130 wounded on Friday and early Saturday when armed men in pickup trucks stormed Khilani Square and shot live ammunition at demonstrators.

Khilani Square is adjacent to Tahrir, the main protest camp in the Iraqi capital.

At least 425 people have died since the leaderless uprising shook Iraq on Oct. 1
