China's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it supports Saudi Arabia's handling of case of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

On Tuesday, a court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death for the killing of the Washington Post columnist and royal family critic.

Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the case is Saudi Arabia's internal affairs and should not be "politicized or internationalized."

Geng also told reporters the Chinese and American trade teams are in close communication over the signing of the first phase of a trade deal, but he gave no details or timeline.

President Donald Trump Tuesday said the US and China would hold a formal ceremony to sign the phase one deal.

The US and China announced the preliminary plan earlier this month to avoid tax increases on imports from China and required China to purchase more agricultural and other products from the US.
