Irish newspaper The Irish Post reported that the 77-meter (253-feet) ship, named the Alta, had been drifting for more than a year.
The Irish Coast Guard said the 10-member crew of the ship had been abandoned in the Atlantic in September 2018.
Cork County Council is assessing what to do with the wreck that washed up in the aftermath of Storm Dennis, which caused widespread damage across the UK and Ireland over the last few days.
It said they have identified no visible pollution coming from the shipwreck, and a marine contractor will attempt to board the ship on Wednesday for further assessment.
