During a news conference in Geneva, Dr. Bruce Aylward called China's various strategies - which include city lockdowns, the building of hospitals and the gathering of extensive amounts of detailed data - "an extraordinary mobilization."
Aylward said the outbreak in China had now "plateaued," adding hundreds of thousands of possible cases had been prevented thanks to the Chinese efforts.
In response to confirmed cases elsewhere in the world, Aylward said other countries could learn from China by rapidly identifying cases, finding or building the necessary medical facilities and engaging the population.
Aylward spoke after a visit to Wuhan - the Chinese city at the epicenter of the virus outbreak - where he headed a team that would gather information on the situation and report back to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
