1:12Now PlayingNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo authorized the National Guard on Friday to begin taking unused ventilators from medical facilities not yet strained by coronavirus patients and redistribute them to overwhelmed hot zones, an aggressive measure highlighting conditions that are increasingly dire. #Coronavirus #Covid19 #CoronavirusNYC
The move came as officials from New York City and the state began to warn that the health system was nearing its capacity to handle the waves of patients, with possibly just days to go before reaching the limits of ventilators and hospital bed space.
At the same time, Cuomo announced dispiriting data showing more than 10,000 new infections, bringing the total to more than 100,000 New Yorkers. He reported an additional 500 deaths, with the total now approaching 3,000. It was the worst day so far of coronavirus fatalities.
