South Korea Becomes First Big COVID-19 Hotspot to Head to the Polls

South Koreans went to the polls to vote in the country's legislative elections on Wednesday, amid the country's continued efforts to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The 21st legislative elections began with polling stations opening at 6 a.m. (0900GMT) for voters, some of whom were already waiting in line even before the stations opened.

Voters were required to wear masks, were checked for fever at the entrance of their polling stations, and were asked to maintain social distance while moving only in a guided path in polling stations.

The country holds the elections every 4 years.

This year's elections will determine whether the ruling Democratic Party will maintain its majority or lose control of the parliament to the main opposition United Future party.

South Korea election is the first case of a country holding national elections in an infected country amid the pandemic outbreak.

The country currently has 10,564 people infected with the new virus, with 222 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
