Asian actors like Alain Uy, Will Yun Lee and Olivia Cheng are speaking out against racism towards the Asian community, whose members have been blamed for spreading the coronavirus after the first cases were reported in Wuhan, China.
Actor Will Yun Lee says he fears for the safety of his family, once things calm down and they re-enter public life. There is also a larger fear in Hollywood that fewer movies telling Asian stories will be commissioned because of the existing stigma.
Among the hate crimes reported in major Chinese communities in the United States, there have been incidents of people being sprayed with air freshener on the street, being bullied at school and physically abused due to the stigma surrounding the origin of the virus.
