as posted by the channelThe Army's top leaders are defending their decision to bring 1,000 cadets back to the Military Academy at West Point for graduation, where President Donald Trump is slated to speak on June 13.
The military academy's cadets left for spring break in early March and have not returned since then. The president is scheduled to speak to the class at graduation ceremonies, and special procedures have been put in place to protect them against the spread of COVID-19.
"So they'll come back, they'll stage for one day. We'll screen them, test them," said Gen. Darryl Williams, the superintendent at the military academy.
"While they're at West Point, they'll be segregated the entire time. They'll come back in five cohorts. No cohort will intermingle," he said.
The announcement has been criticized as a political move to get Trump on stage at the Academy, where he hasn't yet given a graduation address.
Williams said there are essential tasks that can only be done at West Point, and the graduating class still have their belongings at the academy.
"Quarantine, social isolation, wearing masks, that's the way they are going to live for 14 days to ensure they don't have COVID-19," he said.
They say that despite the coronovirus risk, students must prepare for their next duty assignment. "Our troops need to be ready to go," said Gen. James McConville, the chief of staff of the Army.
"And what we need to do as leaders is put the appropriate risk measures in place. And we're we going to do that," he said.
