A US woman, her adult son and husband have been charged in the fatal shooting of a security guard who refused to let her daughter enter a Michigan Family Dollar without wearing a face mask to protect against transmission of the coronavirus.

Calvin Munerlyn was shot Friday at the store just north of downtown Flint a short time after discussing with Sharmel Teague's daughter that she didn't have on a mask. That's according to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.

"The governor issues these executive orders based upon information she gets from health experts. Our job is to enforce the law. And that's what we do," Leyton said at a news conference Monday. "And we do it without favoritism. And in this case, there's just no excuse for somebody to take this kind of an action over this kind of an issue. I can't fathom one."

According to Leyton, Sharmel Teague argued with Munerlyn before leaving. Two men later came to the store. Sharmel Teague; her husband, Larry Teague; and Ramonyea Bishop are charged with first-degree premeditated murder and gun charges.

Sharmel Teague has been arrested. Police were seeking Larry Teague and Bishop.

A makeshift memorial featuring balloons and signs was set up outside the store in honor of Munerlyn, who was known as a fixture in the Flint community.

"When I found out what had happened to him, it really broke my heart, because I know what kind of person he was," Genesee County Commissioner Bryant Nolden said Monday. "So, I'm extremely happy that we have law enforcement here that are going to find these individuals. And I want to make sure that they be brought to justice, because this was extremely senseless over a mask."

Last month, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered that people have to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces such as grocery stores.
