0:34Now PlayingHaving a COVID-19 vaccine by January or maybe even for emergency use in the fall is "a stretch goal" but the head of the National Institutes of Health is gearing up for a master experiment to rapidly find which ones work.
"This has brought together all of the players to try to speed up the process of getting that vaccine tested, figuring out whether it's safe and effective, and then getting it to the public, because everybody recognizes that's got to be the highest priority right now. And it's working," said NIH director Dr. Francis Collins.
Collins says one or two of the most promising vaccine candidates will begin the large-scale testing by July, with others to follow soon. Instead of each vaccine maker creating its own key study, Collins says testing the same way through this partnership will speed answers and allow accurate comparisons of the shots.
"I think we will see as soon as July the large scale trials beginning to get underway for at least one or maybe two of the vaccines that are furthest along. And then others, I'm hoping, come along not too long after that," said Collins.
Worldwide, about a dozen possible vaccines are in early tests or poised to begin. Collins says proving they work will require tests in places the virus still is spreading, and the NIH can open test sites in the U.S. or other countries.
"All of that can only happen with the hardest work, the best science, the best thinking about preparation. That's why we're doing all this manufacturing work ahead of time, because otherwise you'd never be able to make that many doses at the last minute. Everybody's all hands on deck mode here," said Collins.
