0:37Now PlayingAuthorities in the Belgian city of Antwerp removed a statue of the country's former monarch Leopold II for repairs on Tuesday after it was damaged during anti-racism protests.
The monument to the former king, which has long been a target due to his rule in Belgium's African colonies a century ago, had been set alight and doused with red paint.
The port city, through which many colonial riches entered Belgium, will assess what to do with the statue - bring it back to its original location or transport it to a nearby park where it could be displayed in the future.
With protests sweeping the world in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, King Leopold II is now increasingly seen as a stain on the nation as demonstrators demand he disappear from public view.
Statues of the late king have been defaced in several cities across Belgium.
